Original Short Stories: All That
Hello ladies and gentlemen, this will be the last Original Short Story for a few weeks as i have mentioned before, I’m off to Scotland on holiday tomorrow! Yipeee! In my absence however please take a look on the writing page of this site to see the other stories and poems that have already been posted here, and make sure you have a listen to the audiobook versions either on the audio page or on iTunes here: Original Short Stories.
So without further ado, on with the story! This is another one of my really short stories. I aimed to keep it really quick so that it would reflect the nature of quickly seeing this kind of thing in the street and passing by almost as if nothing happened... perhaps you will understand after you have read it!
All That
By Daniel .M. Brown
Into the bank doors walked a tall man, dressed in what appeared to be an expensive suit, shoes shining, and gel propping up his short black hair. He walked over to the cash point to withdraw some money from the ATM, a business lunch today, or “power lunch” as the company insisted on calling them, so he would need to make sure that he was stocked up on funds just in case he was left to clear up the bill... as had happened the last time, he was compensated for it, but still he thought it was out of line to be expected to pay when the company chequebook had disappeared.
He reached into the right hand pocket of his trousers, he grabbed at the wallet. It wasn’t there. His immediate thought was that he had dropped it somewhere, oh dear this could be bad. Where had he been? He thought it through. With relief he realised it was just in his briefcase, left in the car. He then had a jolt from the relief, where were his car keys, not in the briefcase with the wallet? He instantly found relief again when he felt them in his jacket pocket, how could he have driven the car if they were in the briefcase he thought!
He put his hand into the jacket pocket to get the keys as he turned away from the cash point and headed to the door. His hand found a piece of paper with the keys, he took it out of the pocket and discovered it was a twenty pound note, he had it ready to hand to one of his colleagues who was taking part in a sponsored walk. He considered whether to take his chances and just head to lunch with this, but reflecting on the venue they were dining at he decided he would need to go back to the bank after retrieving his wallet, a twenty might not even cover his own dinner.
As he walked out of the bank and passed the bakery next door a homeless man looked up from the tattered gloves on his hands. He saw the well dressed man slip the twenty pound note back into his pocket, as he walked on by their eyes met and in a broken voice the homeless man simply said:
“What are you going to do with all that?”
The End.
Thanks for reading folks, I look forward to writing more of these stories while I am away in Scotland!
I will make a quick post tomorrow,
Until then and as usual; look after yourself and have fun,
dan
