Welcome back to the back on track posting schedule! (Sorry I just desperately wanted to write in that “back to the back” part of that sentence!) Anyway as I said yesterday this wasn’t so much of a review as it is a reminder of an excellent work!
After all this time and all the opinions and discussion around Romeo and Juliet it would be almost impossible for me to do a review and not repeat things that have been said for hundreds of years. So I will just keep this as short and sweet as possible with a few of my own thoughts and feelings on it in general.
Firstly why on earth did I choose this for this weeks review? Well I was looking at my books wandering which was next when I realised that I had been completely overlooking this tattered book wedged between “The Lost Symbol” and a guide to churches and cathedrals! I then had the thought that an awful lot of people would be doing the same thing with regards to this book. With all the modern stuff constantly being touted to us everywhere we look why would anybody outside of a classroom look here?
To be honest I don’t have the answer to that question other than asking how long it has been since you last saw this book, or if you even studied it at school at all. The difference in mindset and understanding, maybe even relating to the characters is likely to be completely different than it was when you were at school. Surely there must be some sort of curiosity there to find out if you will have any memories jogged by it, or if you will think yourself a much better/worse person than you were back then reading it!
Personally I have always loved this play and I have always carried various lines from Act 3 Scene 1 in my memory since first reading it. In fact I liked it so much that the copy I have is my old school copy that I have kept for the last 8 years! (Ssshhhh don’t tell anybody, the late return fee’s at the library will be through the roof!) Perhaps watching the Franco Zeffirelli film version at the same time also helped me gain a love for this title. But all I can really say with this little piece is that I heartily recommend this book, just like I do with all the things I review, only things that I think are worthy end up here remember!
I have also added links to the 1968 Franco Zeffirelli film that I so loved, it is old so bare in mind it might be a little less sleek than the modern Hollywood film!
Thanks for reading, I hope you have a classic week!
Until Fridays History episode,
As always,
Have fun and look after yourself,
dan
