Hello lads and lasses, hope you are all well, Roverandom is on the reviewers desk today!
Another of J.R.R. Tolkien’s works that if it were not for the Lord of the Rings films would have likely been lost forever. This is not your usual Tolkien however. This book was written for his son Michael as a bedtime story. Michael had lost his favourite toy, a lead dog and so Tolkien came up with this crazy tale to explain what he had got up to. At only around 100 pages it is clear that this was a nice simple bed time story that grew over a few nights in 1925.
I will keep this short as it only warrants a small summary of why this is worth reading! How often do you really have something so personal from not just a person but a family? The idea of Tolkien at his child’s bedside telling these tales of the toy dog “Rover” (hence the title of the book) is heart warming itself. But actually reading something that is just a fun story is always a pleasure to do!
The story follows the misadventures of Rover the dog as he ends up under the sea and even on the moon! Being a child's story it is to be expected that there is nothing hard hitting or terrifying within the pages, there are however plenty of humorous characters and odd events that need to be read to be fully appreciated.
On that note I will also recommend taking a look at another (video!) review of a Tolkien children's book: Mr Bliss.
But now I hear a scratching at the door… could it be that Rovers adventures are still going on? Take a look it might be the best book you ever read!
Thanks for reading,
As always and until the next time:
Look after yourself,
and have fun,
dan
